Hailakandi, Sept 3: A significant crowd gathered on Thursday outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Hailakandi, voicing concerns that eligible beneficiaries were being unjustly removed from the state's Orunodoi scheme.

The protest was spearheaded by Congress MLA Jubair Anam from Algapur-Katlicherra, who led demonstrators in a rally towards the Deputy Commissioner's office located on Kachari Road.

Law enforcement intervened to prevent the protesters from entering the office grounds, employing a mild lathicharge to manage the situation.

Many individuals whose names were reportedly omitted from the Orunodoi beneficiary list joined the protest.

Speaking to the media, Anam claimed that the ongoing reviews of the beneficiary list had led to the removal of numerous eligible individuals. He cautioned that a larger protest would ensue if their concerns remained unaddressed.

“Those entitled to Orunodoi benefits are being denied assistance. Actual flood victims are also not receiving the help they need. Names are being removed from the list, alongside other issues like corruption and poor road conditions,” Anam stated.

The MLA mentioned that authorities had been alerted about these discrepancies but no substantial action had been taken.

“The individuals you see protesting today are not just party supporters; they are local residents of Hailakandi affected by these problems,” he emphasized.

He further accused the government of harassing those who reported irregularities in various schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Anam also questioned the quality of road construction and repair work in Hailakandi, alleging that several contractors approved by the government had failed to execute projects despite receiving funds.

He indicated that the party might initiate a separate movement regarding these issues and would demand an investigation into the alleged irregularities in road construction projects within the district.

As this report was being compiled, the protesters were awaiting a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner to discuss their grievances.

“He must assure the public of his support. We will remain here until the DC comes to meet us,” a protester remarked.
