Guwahati, Apr 17: As the countdown to vote counting begins, political rhetoric is heating up in Assam, with parties presenting starkly different forecasts.
Rafiqul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), announced on Friday that the party anticipates winning approximately 15 or more seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.
“We have contested in 28 to 29 constituencies this time, and we are confident of securing around 15 or more seats,” he stated during a press conference in Guwahati.
Reaffirming the party's position, Islam emphasized that AIUDF is staunchly against the BJP and is prepared to make “any sacrifice” to support an alternative government.
“Should any opposition party manage to form a government against the BJP, we will offer our support,” he remarked, while also noting that the true outcome will only be clear once the results are announced.
These comments come in the wake of varying predictions from different political factions.
On April 13, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) claimed that the opposition coalition is likely to establish the next government, estimating a seat count of 68 to 76.
AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan asserted that the BJP would be limited to 35 to 40 seats.
Conversely, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism for a significant win for the BJP-led coalition, forecasting over 90 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
He also anticipated a lackluster performance from the opposition, predicting that AIUDF might only secure 4 to 5 seats, while Congress could fall below the 20-seat threshold.
As the counting day nears, the stark differences in these projections highlight the intense competition, with both the ruling coalition and the opposition exuding confidence in their chances.
