Guwahati, April 10: In a remarkable display of civic engagement, women voters in Assam have led the charge during the recent Assembly elections, resulting in an unprecedented voter turnout, as reported by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday.
The state achieved an overall voter turnout of 85.91%, surpassing Kerala's long-held record of 85.77% from 1960. Election officials credited this surge primarily to the enthusiastic participation of women across various constituencies.
Women in Assam achieved a turnout rate of 86.50%, setting a new record and exceeding the previous high of 84.67% recorded during the 2016 Assembly elections. This significant increase highlights a transformative shift in electoral engagement, as female voters outnumbered their male counterparts.
Male voter turnout reached 85.33%, also a record for the state, improving from the previous best of 84.33% in 2016.
While male participation was strong, it was the higher turnout among women that played a crucial role in elevating the overall polling percentage to this historic level.
This trend of women surpassing men in voter turnout was also observed in Kerala and Puducherry, but Assam distinguished itself by breaking overall turnout records, showcasing the extensive voter mobilization efforts in the state.
Officials from the ECI noted that the turnout in Assam's Assembly elections significantly outperformed the participation levels seen during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which recorded a turnout of 81.87%. The increase to 85.91% in the current elections indicates a marked rise in political engagement.
This data reflects a broader trend of increasing female participation in elections, with Assam serving as a prime example of how women voters are influencing electoral outcomes and establishing new standards in democratic involvement.
