Silchar, Oct 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to establish the inaugural board for the Silchar Municipal Corporation after achieving a significant victory in the civic elections, winning 34 out of 42 wards in collaboration with its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
The BJP claimed victory in 32 wards, while the AGP secured two. Additionally, independents won six wards and the Congress managed to win two, ensuring that the BJP-AGP alliance surpassed the required majority of 21.
Prior to the counting process, the BJP had already won Wards 9 and 20 uncontested, providing them with an early lead.
Notable BJP winners included Saurav Kumar Nath (Ward 2), Dolly Das (3), Shibani Rani Das (4), and several others, showcasing a strong performance across the board.
Vote counting commenced at 8 am at the ISTT complex in Ramnagar, conducted under strict security measures. As the counting progressed, the BJP solidified its dominance, with many candidates winning by considerable margins. The counting concluded on Tuesday evening.
In Ward 17, BJP candidate Ataur Rahman Laskar, who also serves as the district Minority Morcha president, achieved a notable victory, marking a significant entry for the party into the corporation.
The AGP also made its presence felt with wins by Sabina Yasmin Barbhuiya in Ward 16 and Mia Khan in Ward 26, bolstering the alliance's standing within the civic body.
Despite the BJP's request for a recount in Wards 29 and 30, the initial results remained unchanged. Independent candidate Sampa Deb Roy Dhar retained Ward 29, while Congress candidate Sakshi Banik held her ground in Ward 30.
The recount revealed additional votes for the winning candidates, but election officials confirmed that the originally declared margins would remain official.
Ward 41 also faced uncertainty as Congress candidate Rajshree Goala initially won, but the BJP's recount request did not change the outcome, and the seat remained with Congress.
Independents performed notably well, winning six wards, with Hashim Uddin Barbhuiya (Ward 1), Dhruvajyoti Das (Ward 19), and others contributing to their success.
This election result signifies a considerable setback for the Congress in Silchar's first municipal corporation election, highlighting the BJP's growing influence in the city's urban political arena.
Simultaneously, the success of independents in various wards suggests that local contests maintain a unique political dynamic, despite the overarching BJP victory.
With the BJP-AGP alliance controlling 34 of the 42 wards, the establishment of the first Silchar Municipal Corporation board is now virtually assured.
