Guwahati, May 4: According to preliminary trends reported by television channels, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi are currently leading in the Jalukbari and Jorhat Assembly constituencies, respectively.

In Khowang, Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi is also showing a lead. Former Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah, who switched to the BJP before the elections, are ahead in the Dispur and Bihpuria constituencies.

The counting of votes for Assam's 126 Assembly constituencies commenced at 8 am on Monday. Early trends suggest that the ruling BJP is leading in 17 constituencies, while the Congress is ahead in eight.

Official figures from the Election Commission are still pending. The counting began with postal ballots, and votes from Electronic Voting Machines will be counted afterward. Trends for other parties are still being awaited.

This counting process is taking place at 40 centers across all 35 districts of Assam. Most districts have a single counting center for all constituencies, but Nagaon has three, while Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat each have two.

A total of 722 candidates are contesting, and the results will determine if the ruling NDA secures a third consecutive term or if the Congress-led opposition can take control.

Security measures have been heightened around counting centers, with 25 companies of central armed police forces deployed to protect strongrooms and ensure a smooth counting process.

Among the political parties, Congress has nominated the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90 and the AIUDF with 30. NDA allies AGP have 26 candidates, while BPF has 11. Raijor Dal is contesting 13 seats, AJP 10, CPI(M) three, and APHLC two. The AAP and UPPL have each fielded 18 candidates, TMC has 22, and JMM has 16, along with 258 Independent candidates.

Polling for all 126 constituencies took place in a single phase on April 9, achieving a high voter turnout of 85.96% from over 2.5 crore voters. The results will shape the political landscape of the state for the next five years.
