What to Expect from the Upcoming US-India Trade Talks: Insights from Ambassador Sergei Gor
US Welcomes Indian Delegation for Trade Discussions
Washington: On Thursday, the United States expressed eagerness to host an Indian delegation later this month to further discussions on the bilateral trade agreement established in February. US Ambassador to India, Sergei Gor, made this announcement following a meeting with Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative. Currently visiting the US, Gor also engaged with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other officials.
In a post on X, Gor highlighted the productive nature of his meeting with Ambassador Greer, emphasizing the importance of advancing trade priorities set by the President in South and Central Asia. He stated, "The United States and India have previously agreed to a trade deal, and we look forward to welcoming an Indian delegation to Washington later this month." This meeting follows the launch of the India-US Trade Facilitation Portal by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, as both nations aim for a $500 billion trade target.
The framework established promotes reciprocal and mutually advantageous trade, enhances market access, and fortifies supply chain resilience through expanded preferential access, stringent rules of origin, and the resolution of non-tariff barriers across various sectors. After his meeting with Treasury Secretary Bessent, Gor praised him as a "true leader who’s done an incredible job in handling complex economic issues." Additionally, Gor met with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau to discuss his recent regional trip and the future of commercial diplomacy in South and Central Asia.
