Vinod Khosla's Group Set to Acquire Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 Billion
Historic Acquisition of the Seattle Seahawks
A group led by tech entrepreneur Vinod Khosla has reached an agreement to purchase the Seattle Seahawks. This deal, estimated at $9.6 billion, is anticipated to break records in the National Football League (NFL). The estate of the late Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and previous owner of the franchise, has finalized the sale with Khosla's ownership group, as stated in a press release from the Seahawks.
Khosla expressed his enthusiasm for joining the franchise on social media, indicating that no further comments would be made until the sale is officially completed. The specifics of the deal remain undisclosed and are pending NFL approval.
Bloomberg reported that other bidders for the Seahawks included Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, and former Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, alongside Khosla's separate bid. The initial bidding round for the Seahawks was set to close on June 29, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Seahawks, who triumphed over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX this past February, were expected to sell for more than the previous NFL record of $6.05 billion, which was set by the Washington Commanders in 2023. NFL regulations stipulate that any prospective ownership group must provide 30% of the purchase price upfront.
Vinod Khosla is the founder of Khosla Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley. He co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and spent 18 years at Kleiner Perkins before establishing his own investment fund.
