Tragic Incident at Vedanta's Chhattisgarh Plant
Shares of Vedanta Limited were anticipated to experience a downturn in trading on Wednesday due to a catastrophic incident at their power facility in Chhattisgarh. A boiler explosion reportedly resulted in the deaths of 10 workers and left 24 others injured, causing widespread panic at the site. The company confirmed that the tragic event occurred at the Unit-1 boiler of its Athena Power plant located in Singhitarai, Chhattisgarh.
Despite analysts predicting a decline in share prices, Vedanta's stock actually saw an increase during the trading session. By 11:50 AM, shares were priced at Rs 759.85, reflecting a rise of Rs 7.20 or 0.90%. The stock opened at Rs 752.00, reached a peak of Rs 768.00, and dipped to a low of Rs 741.10.
Anil Agarwal, the Chairman of Vedanta, expressed his sorrow regarding the incident through a post on the social media platform X, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident at the Singhitarai plant in Chhattisgarh. Everyone affected is my family. Your tears are mine. Your pain is mine.” He assured that the company would provide full support to those impacted and that a thorough investigation is underway.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the event as "extremely tragic" and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He expressed his distress over the boiler explosion at the Vedanta Power Plant in Singhtirai, Sakti district, and offered prayers for the deceased and their families.
In the third quarter of the financial year, Vedanta reported a significant 61% increase in consolidated profits, amounting to Rs 5,710 crore, with revenues climbing 19% to Rs 45,899 crore.
