US and India Near Historic Trade Agreement

The United States and India are on the brink of finalizing a historic trade agreement, as highlighted by US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bethany Poulos Morrison. This deal aims to open India's vast market to American goods under mutually beneficial terms. With a target of achieving $500 billion in trade by 2030, both nations are working diligently to conclude an interim agreement before the expiration of a temporary tariff. Recent discussions between US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal have added momentum to these negotiations, which are seen as crucial for strengthening economic relations.

Progress Towards a Bilateral Trade Deal

According to Bethany Poulos Morrison, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, the United States and India are on the verge of finalizing a significant bilateral trade agreement. This deal is expected to facilitate access for American products into the vast Indian market, which boasts a population of 1.4 billion, under mutually advantageous conditions. Speaking at an event hosted by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) on Capitol Hill, Morrison highlighted the ongoing efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump to foster a 'result-oriented' partnership. She noted, 'In February 2026, we expressed our intention to conclude this historic trade deal, and we are very, very close.'

Morrison emphasized that the forthcoming trade agreement aims to create reciprocal opportunities for American goods in India. She mentioned the administration's commitment to 'Mission 500,' which targets achieving $500 billion in trade by 2030 with a strong sense of urgency. Her comments coincided with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer's visit to India for talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal regarding the trade agreement. On Tuesday, Goyal and Greer engaged in high-level discussions in New Delhi to adjust the proposed bilateral trade deal in light of recent changes in US tariff policies. Both parties are working towards finalizing an interim trade agreement before July 24, when a temporary 10 percent tariff on imports from trading partners is set to expire. Greer's two-day visit follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump at the G7 summit in France on June 17, which has reinvigorated the trade discussions that both nations consider vital for enhancing economic relations.
