UK's Unemployment Rate Sees Notable Drop: What the Latest Survey Reveals
Unemployment Rate Declines in July 2026
New Delhi: The unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 and older fell to 5.1% in July 2026, down from 5.5% in June, as per a government survey.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) revealed that the unemployment rate in rural areas dropped to 4.5%, down from 5% the previous month. Meanwhile, the urban unemployment rate remained relatively unchanged at 6.7% in July, compared to 6.6% in June.
In comparison to July 2025, both the overall and rural unemployment rates remained stable, while the urban unemployment rate saw a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from 7.2%.
The survey indicated a decline in rural unemployment rates across genders and a slight decrease in urban male unemployment.
For males aged 15 and above, the overall unemployment rate decreased from 5.3% in June to 5.0% in July, which is also a reduction of 0.3 percentage points compared to July 2025.
The rural male unemployment rate fell from 4.9% in June to 4.6% in July, remaining consistent with the previous year. Urban male unemployment, however, showed stability month-on-month but decreased by 0.7 percentage points to 5.9% compared to July 2025.
For females aged 15 and above, both the overall and rural unemployment rates decreased in July compared to June, yet they remained higher than the figures from July 2025.
The urban female unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 8.8% in July from 8.4% in June, while it remained stable compared to the previous year (8.7%).
Overall, both male and female unemployment rates saw a decline in July 2026 compared to June 2026.
The all-India estimates are based on data collected from 371,021 individuals surveyed.

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for those aged 15 and above increased to 55.4% in July 2026, up from 54.4% in June.
After a decline from March to May and remaining unchanged in June, the LFPR saw an uptick in July.
In rural areas, the LFPR rose to 58.0% in July from 56.6% in June, marking a 1.4 percentage point increase. Urban LFPR saw a slight rise from 50.1% to 50.4% during the same period.
Year-on-year, the overall LFPR increased by 0.5 percentage points from 54.9% in July 2025 to 55.4% in July 2026.
Rural LFPR also saw an increase of 1.1 percentage points, while urban LFPR experienced a minor decline of 0.3 percentage points.
The overall female LFPR significantly increased from 32.7% in June to 34.4% in July 2026. Rural female LFPR rose from 36.6% to 38.8%, while urban female LFPR increased slightly from 24.8% to 25.3%.
Compared to July 2025, the overall female LFPR increased by 1.1 percentage points, with rural female LFPR rising by 1.9 percentage points, while urban female LFPR saw a small decline.
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for those aged 15 and above showed a positive trend in July 2026 across various sectors.
The overall WPR increased to 52.5% in July from 51.4% in June.
In rural areas, WPR rose to 55.4% from 53.8%, indicating a 1.6 percentage point increase.
Urban WPR saw a slight increase to 47.0% from 46.8%. Notably, rural female WPR increased by 2.5 percentage points from 34.7% to 37.2%, while urban female WPR rose from 22.7% to 23.1%.
Year-on-year, the overall WPR is up by 0.5 percentage points in July 2026 compared to July 2025.
While urban WPR remained stable at 47.0%, rural WPR increased by 1.0 percentage point.
Rural female WPR saw a significant rise to 37.2% in July 2026 from 34.7% in the previous month.
