Transition to Digital Toll Payments Begins April 10

Beginning April 10, cash payments will be phased out at toll plazas on national highways, requiring drivers to utilize digital payment methods such as FASTag or UPI. This transition aims to streamline toll collection and reduce congestion at toll booths. Alongside this change, toll rates in Uttar Pradesh have increased by up to 10%. Updated rates for various expressways have been announced, affecting all vehicle types. Drivers are advised to ensure their FASTags are recharged and linked to their bank accounts before the deadline to avoid any inconveniences.

Digital-Only Toll Payments on National Highways

Starting April 10, cash transactions will be eliminated at toll booths on national highways, as announced by the government. From this date, drivers will be required to pay tolls exclusively through digital methods, primarily using FASTag or UPI. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has officially ceased cash acceptance at all National Highway Traffic Plazas (NHTPs) as part of its initiative to implement a fully electronic tolling system nationwide. This move is aimed at transitioning from traditional cash transactions to a complete e-tolling framework, which is expected to minimize waiting times and alleviate congestion in toll collection processes.

This change will impact around 1,150 toll collection points across the National Highway System, including interstate highways and expressways. In conjunction with this announcement, toll rates for vehicles on National Highways and Expressways in Uttar Pradesh have risen by up to 10%. Specifically, expressway tolls have increased by 1.5% to 3.5%.

Updated Toll Rates:

Agra–Lucknow Expressway: Car/SUV tolls will rise from Rs 665 to Rs 675; two-wheeler tolls will increase from Rs 330 to Rs 335.

Gorakhpur Link Expressway: The toll for 4-wheelers will now be Rs 295 (an increase of Rs 10), while 2-wheeler tolls will be Rs 145 (up by Rs 5). These new rates will also apply to buses, trucks, and other commercial vehicles.

The government anticipates that eliminating cash payments will enhance travel efficiency for all users. Drivers are encouraged to recharge their FASTags and link them to their bank accounts ahead of the April 10 deadline to prevent any issues at toll booths.
