Tata Group Faces Stock Decline Amid Leadership Changes

New Delhi: On Wednesday, shares of Tata Group experienced a significant downturn, particularly Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which saw a decline of nearly 6%. This drop followed an announcement from Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, stating he would not pursue reappointment when his term concludes on February 20, 2027.

The stock prices reflected this uncertainty, with TCS falling by 5.70%, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles decreasing by 4.11%, and Tata Consumer Products dropping 2.85%. Other companies within the group also faced losses, including Tata Elxsi (down 2.14%), Tata Communications (down 2%), Tata Steel (down 1.96%), and Titan (down 1.66%).

Additionally, Tata Power saw a decline of 1.40%, Indian Hotels Company fell by 1.32%, and Trent dropped 0.89% on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

During midday trading, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell by 604.65 points, settling at 77,544.63, while the 50-share NSE Nifty decreased by 192.05 points to 24,276.

Chandrasekaran's announcement regarding his reappointment came after months of speculation surrounding the leadership of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. He revealed that the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which hold a majority stake in Tata Sons, had unanimously recommended extending his term by five years. However, this proposal was not approved during a Board meeting on February 24 due to a lack of unanimous support.

In his statement, Chandrasekaran emphasized the importance of clarity in leadership, especially as Tata Sons manages several strategic initiatives at critical junctures. He expressed his decision not to seek reappointment and urged the Board to expedite the selection of his successor to facilitate a seamless transition.

Tata Sons, which is the primary holding entity of the Tata Group, is predominantly owned by Tata Trusts and oversees over 30 companies, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, and Air India.
