The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has bestowed its esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award upon Sunil Bharti Mittal, the Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises. This award acknowledges his significant contributions to the advancement of global telecommunications and the enhancement of connectivity around the world. It is a rare honor, given to only a few distinguished leaders in the history of GSMA, recognizing those whose efforts have profoundly influenced the communications landscape. The award was presented during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, attended by notable figures including Felipe VI, Pedro Sanchez, and Salvador Illa, along with other key players from the global telecom sector.

Pioneering Mobile Communications

Mittal is celebrated as a trailblazer who has transformed mobile communications in emerging markets. Under his guidance, Bharti Airtel has evolved into one of the largest mobile service providers globally, with operations spanning India and Africa. Currently, the company ranks among the top three telecom operators worldwide, serving over half a billion customers.

In addition to corporate growth, Mittal has played a crucial role in shaping industry-wide policies and fostering collaboration. His tenure as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018 was marked by his advocacy for regulatory frameworks that encouraged investment, spurred innovation, and reinforced commitments to digital inclusion. His leadership emphasized the industry's collective goal of closing connectivity gaps and integrating millions more into the digital world.

Upon receiving the award, Sunil Bharti Mittal expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition and sincerely thank the GSMA for this award. I accept it not only as a personal milestone but as a tribute to India’s telecom journey, the collective spirit of Bharti, and the rise of Indian telecom companies on the global stage. This award also reflects the progress of an industry that has connected billions and belongs to the customers we serve, the teams who built our institutions, and the partners who believe in the transformative power of connectivity.”

He further remarked, “Telecommunication is a force that expands opportunity, places essential services in the palm of every individual, and unlocks human potential. Helping shape its evolution into a powerful accelerator of modern progress has been a privileged responsibility. As innovation accelerates, we will continue to collaborate with our partners and stakeholders to ensure that growth advances equity and creates lasting opportunities for generations to come.”
