Union Cabinet Approves Wage Ceiling Increase

New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet sanctioned a proposal to increase the wage ceiling for mandatory coverage under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month.

This adjustment marks the first change in the wage ceiling in 12 years.

According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, this decision is anticipated to extend mandatory EPFO coverage to over 5.1 million additional employees, thereby enhancing social security for workers.

The wage ceiling had remained fixed from 2004 until 2014, when it was raised to Rs 15,000 in September of that year.

The latest decision aims to align the wage ceiling with ongoing wage growth, increasing incomes, and the expansion of formal employment, as stated in an official release.

The government's annual expenditure is projected to rise to approximately Rs 11,339 crore, compared to the current budgetary allocation of around Rs 10,250 crore.

Over the next five years, the estimated total expenditure is around Rs 56,696 crore.
