Impact of Heavy Rain on Delhi's Air Travel

New Delhi, Sep 5: On Saturday morning, heavy rainfall in Delhi and nearby regions caused significant disruptions, prompting airlines such as IndiGo and Air India to issue warnings for passengers at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

IndiGo, the largest airline in India, cautioned that the adverse weather could result in flight delays and recommended that travelers verify their flight status prior to heading to the airport. The airline also suggested that passengers allocate extra time for their journey due to potential waterlogging and slower traffic conditions affecting access to the airport.

Similarly, Air India, part of the Tata Group, alerted its passengers that flight schedules to and from Delhi might be impacted by the severe weather.

Despite these warnings, airport officials reported that flight operations were running smoothly as of Saturday morning. In a statement released at 10:30 am, GMR, the operator of IGI Airport, indicated that while inclement weather was anticipated based on forecasts from the India Meteorological Department, operations were continuing without interruption.

The airport management noted that their ground teams were actively collaborating with all relevant parties to facilitate passenger movement and advised travelers to reach out to their airlines for the most current flight updates.

Delhi and its neighboring regions, including Noida and Ghaziabad, experienced moderate rainfall in the morning, providing some relief from the recent heatwave but also leading to waterlogging in various areas.

Locations such as the Palam Airport tunnel, Geeta Colony, Mandi House, and Subroto Park reported significant waterlogging, which hindered traffic flow and disrupted daily activities.

The rainfall also lowered the minimum temperature in Delhi to 24.8 degrees Celsius, a drop of 3.4 degrees from the previous day.

According to meteorological data, Safdarjung recorded 0.7 mm of rain from 11:30 pm on Friday to 5:30 am on Saturday, followed by an additional 1.3 mm in the next three hours until 8:30 am.

The IMD has issued a yellow-to-orange alert for Delhi and surrounding areas, predicting light to moderate rainfall throughout the day.
