SEBI Implements Temporary Work-from-Home Policy Amid Energy Conservation Efforts
New Austerity Measures by SEBI
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which oversees the capital markets in India, has rolled out temporary austerity measures for its employees. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for energy conservation and restraint in light of the current geopolitical climate. As part of the new guidelines, certain employees will be allowed to work from home one day a week, while departments are encouraged to delay meetings, minimize travel, and favor virtual interactions whenever possible.
According to a report, this administrative directive was issued on May 21, as various sectors intensify efforts to cut down on energy use and operational expenses due to global uncertainties stemming from escalating geopolitical tensions. Starting May 25, employees in Grades A to C will have the option to work remotely one day each week on a rotational basis for an eight-week period. However, this flexibility does not extend to senior officials and specific support staff categories.
The advisory specifies that all officers in Grade 'D' and above, as well as employees assigned to the offices of the Chairman and Whole Time Members (WTMs), must report to the office regularly. To maintain operational efficiency, SEBI has instructed regional directors and department heads to create schedules ensuring that at least half of the officers in Grades A to C are present in the office at all times.
SEBI later confirmed that the advisory had been officially distributed among its workforce. In addition to the work-from-home policy, the regulator has requested departments to postpone meetings, brainstorming sessions, and similar activities for the next eight weeks. However, events that have already been booked and may incur cancellation fees will proceed as planned.
Furthermore, the advisory encourages employees to minimize fuel usage and consider alternative commuting options. Employees are urged to utilize public transport, take advantage of subsidized bus services, carpool, use electric vehicles, and limit the use of personal vehicles whenever possible.
Officials are also advised to conduct stakeholder meetings virtually whenever possible as part of the energy-saving initiative.
SEBI's Standard Operating Procedure for Remote Work
To facilitate this temporary hybrid work model, SEBI has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for remote employees. This SOP grants department heads the authority to set work targets, reporting schedules, and productivity expectations for those working from home. Employees have been reminded to exercise caution regarding data privacy, cybersecurity, and confidentiality while accessing official systems remotely. These measures are expected to be in effect for eight weeks, after which SEBI will reassess the situation based on current conditions.
