Russia Enhances Energy Support for India Amid Global Disruptions
Strengthening Energy Ties
In response to the ongoing energy challenges stemming from the conflict in West Asia, Russia has proposed to boost its oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to India. During his visit to India on April 2 and 3, Denis Manturov, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized that Russian firms are well-equipped to enhance energy exports to the Indian market. Manturov, who also leads the India-Russia trade and economic commission, expressed Moscow's readiness to assist India, especially as Middle Eastern supplies have become increasingly unreliable due to the ongoing conflict and issues in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Russian Embassy reported that Russia had already increased its mineral fertilizer exports to India by 40% last year. Additionally, Manturov highlighted that both nations are collaborating on a new project aimed at urea production within India.
On the nuclear energy front, Manturov confirmed that the construction of new units at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is progressing as scheduled. During his visit, he engaged in extensive discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focusing on enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including energy, agriculture, and technology. They also explored innovative approaches to meet each country's demand for critical minerals and improve transportation connectivity between the two nations.
Furthermore, the discussions included a review of agreements established during the previous India-Russia Summit and the Indo-Russian Business Council meeting. Manturov also met with key Indian officials, including Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, underscoring the commitment of both governments to foster a mutually beneficial partnership during these uncertain global times.
