Rising Trend of Destination Weddings Among Indian Couples
The Growing Popularity of Destination Weddings
Destination weddings are increasingly favored by couples in India, with expectations for their prevalence to grow in the coming years. The WedMeGood Destination Wedding Report 2026 indicates that these events are likely to represent 30-32% of all weddings in India by 2028, up from nearly 25% currently. This trend underscores a shift towards more intimate celebrations that emphasize meaningful experiences rather than large traditional gatherings.
The report highlights an 8% increase in spending on destination weddings over the past year, showcasing a rising demand for personalized celebrations. Couples are now budgeting approximately Rs 58 lakh for domestic destination weddings, while those choosing international venues are spending upwards of Rs 1.5 crore. This change is driven by a preference for quality experiences over extensive guest lists, with 42% of surveyed individuals favoring smaller, experience-focused events, indicating a significant shift in wedding planning.
Extended Celebrations on the Rise
Destination weddings are also evolving into longer events, with the average duration now at 3.2 days, compared to just 1.8 days prior to 2020. Couples are crafting experiences that extend beyond the wedding day, focusing on guest engagement throughout the festivities. From curated culinary experiences to wellness activities and themed events spanning several days, hosts are dedicated to creating unforgettable moments for their loved ones. This trend highlights the growing emphasis on providing guests with immersive and personalized experiences rather than a one-day affair.
Mehak Shahani, Co-Founder of WedMeGood, remarked, "Indian weddings are experiencing a significant transformation. Today's couples are not just planning celebrations; they are focused on creating meaningful experiences that unite family and friends." She noted that destination weddings are increasingly centered around personalization, guest involvement, and immersive experiences, with budgets adapting to these evolving expectations.
Sri Lanka: A Top Choice for Destination Weddings
Among international venues, Sri Lanka has emerged as a rapidly growing wedding destination for Indian couples. The report reveals that 44% of couples prefer locations within a two-to-four-hour flight from India, making nearby destinations particularly appealing. Wedding bookings from India to Sri Lanka are projected to increase by 20 to 25% annually. Its strategic location, robust hospitality industry, and diverse travel options are enhancing its attractiveness for couples seeking international celebrations without extensive travel.
Looking ahead, the report anticipates sustained growth for international destination weddings, especially in Asian locales. The rising allure of short-haul luxury travel, coupled with the demand for personalized, experience-oriented celebrations, is expected to drive this trend forward.
