Record Sales Surge for Indian Automakers in May 2026: Maruti Suzuki and Kia Lead the Charge
Strong Performance in the Automotive Sector
In May 2026, Indian car manufacturers experienced significant growth, with Maruti Suzuki and Kia India achieving record-breaking sales figures, continuing the positive trend from the start of the fiscal year.
Maruti Suzuki announced its highest monthly sales ever, reporting 193,535 units sold domestically in May 2026, a notable increase from 138,690 units during the same month last year.
Despite rising fuel prices impacting consumer demand, the company demonstrated robust performance, according to Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki.
Banerjee noted, "While increasing fuel costs can dampen the enthusiasm for small cars, we have seen remarkable growth in both the 'mini' and compact segments, achieving an overall 42% increase in passenger car sales."
Sales of mini vehicles, including the Alto and S-Presso, surged to 16,275 units last month, up from 6,776 units in May 2025. Compact car sales, which include models like Baleno, Celerio, and Swift, rose to 81,555 units compared to 61,960 units in the previous year.
Excluding utility vehicles, Maruti Suzuki's total passenger car sales reached 190,337 units in May, compared to 135,962 units in the same month last year.
Banerjee highlighted the relationship between fuel price increases and car demand, stating, "Rising fuel prices will undoubtedly affect the automotive sector as they raise the overall cost of ownership."
He also mentioned that bookings for the all-electric e-VITARA have doubled to over 4,000 units following the petrol price hikes, while CNG vehicle bookings have increased by 1.4 times.
Tata Motors reported domestic sales of 59,090 units last month, marking a 42% increase from 41,557 units in the same period last year.
Mahindra & Mahindra, another domestic player, sold 58,021 units, reflecting an 11% growth year-on-year.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) experienced a 9.1% increase in domestic sales, reaching 47,837 units in May 2026.

Kia India described this as their "highest-ever sales in May" since entering the market, with Senior Vice-President of Sales & Marketing, Atul Sood, attributing this success to the alignment of their product offerings with changing customer preferences.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded domestic sales of 30,574 units in May, a 4% increase from 29,280 units in the same month last year.
JSW MG Motor India reported sales of 6,048 units in May 2026, although they did not provide year-on-year comparisons.
