India's Automobile Sector Hits New Heights

New Delhi: In August 2026, India's automobile wholesale figures for passenger vehicles (PVs), three-wheelers (3Ws), and two-wheelers (2Ws) reached an all-time high for the month, driven by favorable market conditions and a lower comparison base from the previous year, as reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Tuesday.

Sales of passenger vehicles soared to 439,309 units, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 36.5%. Three-wheeler sales also saw a rise of 22.8%, totaling 93,764 units, while two-wheeler sales climbed by 10.5% to reach 2,034,698 units during the same period.

"The Indian automobile sector is currently experiencing a strong growth trajectory. The impressive figures for August 2026 can be attributed to a lower base from last year," stated Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM.

Menon highlighted that the overall demand landscape remains robust, bolstered by strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, and improving financing options that are enhancing automobile demand across all segments.

He also noted the increasing shift towards alternative drivetrains as a contributing factor to the positive environment for the industry.

"The upcoming festive season is anticipated to further enhance demand, leading to promising results in Q2," Menon added.

SIAM's data indicated that the total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles reached 3,157,822 units in August 2026.

In the preceding month, the automobile sector in India achieved its best-ever sales performance for July, with significant double-digit growth in passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers.

According to SIAM, domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers surged by 34.3% year-on-year, totaling 457,810 units in July compared to 340,772 units in the same month last year.

Additionally, two-wheeler sales rose by 22.6% to 1,923,483 units last month, up from 1,569,120 units a year earlier, while three-wheeler dispatches also experienced strong growth, increasing by 33.4% to 92,560 units compared to 69,403 units in July 2025.
