Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge: What’s Driving the Growth in India?
Significant Growth in Passenger Vehicle Dispatches
New Delhi: In March, the dispatch of domestic passenger vehicles to dealers saw a remarkable increase of 16% year-on-year, totaling 442,460 units. This growth is attributed to heightened demand and a buildup of inventory at dealerships, as reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Tuesday.
Last March, the wholesales for passenger vehicles were recorded at 381,358 units.
The two-wheeler segment also experienced robust growth, with dispatches rising by 19.3% to 1,976,128 units last month, compared to 1,656,939 units during the same month last year, according to the industry body.
Three-wheeler dispatches similarly increased by 21.4% year-on-year, reaching 76,273 units in March, up from 62,813 units in March 2025.
Additionally, domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose by 10.6% year-on-year to 417,705 units in February, indicating sustained positive market sentiment, as per SIAM data.
The overall outlook for the passenger vehicle market remains optimistic, although growth rates are anticipated to moderate in the near future.
An earlier report suggested that the industry is expected to achieve wholesale volume growth of approximately 7-9% in FY26, bolstered by strong festive demand, recent GST reductions, and a consistent flow of new model launches.
However, growth is projected to slow to 4-6% in FY27 due to a higher base and changing macroeconomic factors.
The report also highlighted ongoing structural changes within the sector, noting that utility vehicles now represent nearly 67% of total passenger vehicle sales, reflecting a trend towards premiumization. Furthermore, the increasing adoption of alternative fuel options, including CNG and electric vehicles, is diversifying demand.
