Paradip Port's New Mega Status

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that Paradip Port has been designated as a 'Mega Port' under the Indian Ports Act of 2025, highlighting the state's growing influence in India's maritime sector.

This new classification makes Paradip Port the sole Mega Port along India's eastern coastline, underscoring its vital role as a key trade and connectivity hub, according to Majhi.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister emphasized that this recognition showcases the port's enhanced capacity, strong infrastructure, and operational efficiency. He noted that this status would bolster Odisha's ability to attract investments, improve logistics, and generate new economic prospects for its residents.

Majhi stated, "As Odisha aspires to become a prominent center for trade, industry, and maritime development, Paradip Port will increasingly contribute to the state's economic evolution and the vision of a developed India."

He expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his guidance and to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the acknowledgment given to Paradip Port. "This is a moment of pride for all Odias and a significant milestone in Odisha's progress," the Chief Minister remarked.

On Friday, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways released a notification designating four ports as 'Mega Ports' following an evaluation of specific criteria. In addition to Paradip Port, Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), and Mundra Port, which is the only non-major port in this category, received the same recognition.

Paradip Port is crucial for handling substantial quantities of coal, iron ore, fertilizers, crude oil, and other bulk cargo, serving as an essential logistics center for eastern and central India.
