Oracle Revokes Job Offers to Indian Engineering Students Amid Global Layoffs

Oracle has recently withdrawn job offers from top Indian engineering colleges, including IITs and NITs, as part of a larger strategy to lay off around 30,000 employees globally. This decision has left many students in uncertainty, with reports indicating that over 50 offers have been rescinded. The layoffs are affecting various sectors within the company, and impacted employees are set to receive severance packages that include salary and health insurance. This situation highlights the challenges faced by new graduates in the current job market.

Oracle's Job Offer Withdrawals

The American technology firm Oracle has reportedly rescinded numerous job offers extended to students from top engineering institutions in India, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). This decision follows the company's announcement of plans to lay off approximately 30,000 employees worldwide. Placement offices have confirmed that both full-time employment offers for the Class of 2026 and summer internships have been withdrawn at several IITs, including IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Madras, IIT-BHU, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Roorkee, as well as NIT-Warangal and MNNIT-Allahabad. While the number of rescinded offers varies from two to five per campus, estimates suggest that over 50 offers have been canceled in total, according to reports from a business news outlet.

India is significantly affected by these layoffs, with around 12,000 employees impacted across various roles. The layoffs span multiple sectors, including cloud services, engineering, enterprise solutions, product development, and operations. Reports indicate that teams in development centers and support services in India have faced cuts, with some departments experiencing more significant reductions than others.

Those affected are expected to receive one month's salary as a notice period payment, along with an additional two months' salary as a severance package. Additionally, a health insurance coverage worth Rs 20,000 is included in the compensation. Payments for any unused leave and gratuity will be processed separately, with all calculations based on the gross salary.
