OpenAI Strengthens Its Presence in India

OpenAI has announced the appointment of Prabhjeet Singh, a former executive from Uber India, as its Managing Director for the Indian market. This move highlights OpenAI's commitment to expanding its footprint in one of the most significant artificial intelligence (AI) markets globally. Singh, who previously oversaw Uber's operations in India and South Asia, is set to join OpenAI in September. In this role, he will be the highest-ranking official for the company in India, tasked with enhancing its presence across various sectors.

Reporting to Kiran Mani, the Managing Director for Asia Pacific (APAC), Singh will be responsible for driving consumer growth, enterprise integration, partnerships, regulatory interactions, and overall business operations in India. This leadership transition aligns with OpenAI's strategy to boost investments in India, which it views as crucial for its long-term growth objectives. Over the last year, the company has intensified its collaboration with enterprises, developers, and policymakers while expanding its local operations. Notably, OpenAI opened its first office in New Delhi in November 2025 as part of its strategy to establish a more robust local presence.

As the Managing Director for India, Singh will prioritize forming partnerships and fostering the development of the country's AI ecosystem. His responsibilities will also include assisting consumers, businesses, educational institutions, and government bodies in leveraging artificial intelligence technologies more effectively.

Singh's Impressive Academic and Professional Background

Singh holds a degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, both of which are among India's premier educational institutions. Before venturing into the tech industry, he gained experience in finance as a senior analyst at Lehman Brothers in London and later worked as a senior associate at McKinsey & Company.

His journey with Uber began in 2015 when he took on strategic roles. Over nearly a decade at the ride-hailing giant, Singh held several senior positions, ultimately becoming the President for India and South Asia, where he managed operations across the region before transitioning to his new role at OpenAI.
