Odisha's Semiconductor Sector Poised for Growth

New Delhi: On Thursday, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, emphasized the significant potential of Odisha in the semiconductor industry, announcing that further investments are anticipated soon.

During his address at SEMICON India 2026 held at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, Vaishnaw noted that India is embarking on a new chapter in its semiconductor journey, aiming to enhance capabilities throughout the entire value chain. He remarked, “Odisha has immense potential in the semiconductor sector, and we expect more investments in the near future,” while underscoring the state's growing expertise in advanced semiconductor packaging.

He mentioned the establishment of a 3D packaging unit in Odisha as part of the advanced packaging ecosystem being developed there. Vaishnaw outlined that the next phase of semiconductor development in India, termed Semicon 2.0, will focus on six key areas: design, machinery and materials, additional fabrication plants, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent acquisition.

In the context of the semiconductor industry, he explained that 'tape-out' signifies the point at which a chip design is sent for manufacturing. However, the development of the next version commences immediately after reaching that milestone. Vaishnaw stated that India's semiconductor journey is progressing in a similar manner, consistently advancing from one milestone to the next.
