Odisha's Green Hydrogen Jetty: A Game Changer for Maritime Economy
Major Investment in Green Hydrogen at Paradip Port
Bhubaneswar/Paradip: The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, announced on Friday that the recent approval from the central government for a ₹797 crore green hydrogen jetty at Paradip Port is set to enhance investments and invigorate the state's maritime economy.
The central authorities have given the green light for the construction of this jetty at Paradip Port.
In a post on X, Majhi expressed his sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for their support in approving the ₹797.17 crore dedicated jetty aimed at managing green hydrogen, ammonia, and other liquid cargo.
This project, with a capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), is expected to link Odisha's burgeoning green hydrogen production hubs with international markets, enhance clean energy export logistics, and support India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Majhi emphasized that this initiative will not only promote green investments but also create job opportunities and solidify Odisha's position in developing a sustainable maritime economy.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed on Wednesday the approval for the construction of a dedicated jetty along with necessary facilities for handling green hydrogen, ammonia, and other liquid cargo at Paradip Port, with an estimated investment of ₹797.17 crore. The Paradip Port Authority will execute the project on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, according to an official statement.
The new facility is designed to handle 4 MTPA and aims to establish Paradip Port as a central hub for green energy cargo. It will feature a dedicated jetty, storage systems, pipelines, handling equipment, and other essential facilities.
During the construction phase, the Paradip Port Authority will contribute 20% of the project cost, which amounts to ₹159.43 crore. The project is anticipated to be completed within a span of 24 months.
Officials noted that the facility will also accommodate other liquid cargo to maximize utilization during the initial growth phase of the green hydrogen sector and to diversify the cargo profile of Paradip Port.
