Odisha's Ambitious Plans to Become a Global Tourism Hub Unveiled
Transforming Odisha into a Global Tourism Destination
Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi introduced the 'Odisha Tourism Investment Incentive Management System' alongside a new 'Odisha Tourism Portal' aimed at attracting investors and enhancing the state's appeal as a global tourism hotspot.
During the inauguration of the seventh edition of the 'Odisha Travel Bazaar' in Bhubaneswar, which saw participation from investors and hospitality representatives from both India and abroad, CM Majhi emphasized the vast tourism potential and investment opportunities within the state.
With a coastline stretching 575 kilometers, rich heritage, stunning architecture, and vibrant cultural traditions, Odisha has established a unique presence on the international tourism stage, according to CM Majhi.
"Our vision of a 'Developed Odisha' includes making tourism a fundamental aspect of the state's economic growth and job creation," he stated.
To foster world-class infrastructure and boost investments in tourism, the state has rolled out the 'Odisha Tourism (Amendment) Policy, 2026' along with a dedicated portal, Majhi noted.
The government has simplified regulations for the hotel sector, increased capital subsidy limits, and is in the process of creating a dedicated land bank.
To further stimulate tourism development, the minimum room requirement for star-rated hotels has been lowered from 50 to just 10, while the capital subsidy cap has been raised from Rs 20 crore to Rs 120 crore.
A budget allocation of Rs 1,500 crore and a land bank covering 5,500 acres have been approved for the period of 2026-31 to support the development of tourism infrastructure, including new hotels and resorts.
Majhi also highlighted the significance of safety in tourism promotion, announcing the deployment of Tourist Police and Destination Managers at 29 key tourist locations, along with the placement of 1,000 lifeguards along the state's beaches.
He extended an invitation to investors, hospitality brands, and tourism partners from across the globe to tap into the state's vast potential.
Majhi encouraged the local populace to embrace visitors in line with Odisha's tradition of 'Atithi Devo Bhava'.
He reiterated the call for investment in the state's tourism sector, showcasing Odisha's diverse natural and cultural attractions, including the Jagannath Temple, Konark Sun Temple, Bhitarkanika mangrove forests, Chilika Lake, and the expansive coastline.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida remarked that Odisha is not just a tourist spot but offers a global experience.
"Our Buddhist heritage, handlooms, heritage sites, the vast Chilika Lake, and eco-tourism initiatives reflect this. Our culture thrives in its authentic form, not merely for tourism," Parida added.
The state government is committed to creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem that will enhance employment opportunities and skill development.
Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, who attended the event, emphasized the role of sports and athletes in elevating a country's global standing.
He pointed out India's growing success in international sports, including the Asian Games and Olympics.
"Odisha has significantly contributed to not only tourism but also to Indian hockey. We can confidently say that Odisha is on track to become not just a tourism destination but also India's leading 'sports hub'," Dev stated.
At the event, CM Majhi also unveiled a coffee table book titled 'Pitha, Mitha, Pana'.
