Strategic Meeting to Propel National Waterway-5 Development

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government, in collaboration with the central authorities, is prioritizing the development of National Waterway-5 (NW-5), which stretches 588 kilometers through Odisha and West Bengal. This initiative aims to harness the industrial capabilities of Odisha's mineral-rich regions and enhance connectivity to key ports.

A high-level meeting took place on Tuesday, led by Chief Secretary Anu Garg and Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Secretary Vijay Kumar. This gathering included industry representatives and senior officials from various departments to address outstanding issues and outline the future of this significant inland waterway project.

The NW-5 project encompasses a 332-kilometer river section from Talcher to Paradeep/Dhamra, entirely located in Odisha, while the remaining 256 kilometers consist of a canal section extending from Dhamra to Geonkhali in West Bengal. Once approved, this project is anticipated to significantly enhance cargo transportation and stimulate port-led industrial growth.

Discussions focused on overcoming challenges that necessitate collaboration between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the state government. Critical topics included land acquisition for terminals and hydraulic structures, maintenance of project assets, obtaining statutory clearances, and defining the state's role in the project's execution and operation.

Key considerations also included ensuring sufficient water levels to maintain the Least Available Depth (LAD), developing the Khalpal Navigational Lock, constructing and dismantling bridges, improving last-mile road access, and relocating high-tension and low-tension power lines. Additionally, the meeting reviewed other vital infrastructure initiatives, such as the Bahuda Muhan Port, a proposed shipbuilding cluster in Kendrapada district, and a cruise terminal in Puri, all aimed at enhancing Odisha's maritime and tourism prospects. Garg assured the Centre of the state government's full support for the timely execution of the Odisha segment of NW-5 and other essential projects, emphasizing their significance for industrial advancement and cruise tourism.
