Odisha's Ambitious Clean Energy Goals Unveiled at National Summit
Odisha's Vision for Clean Energy
Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: At the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 held in New Delhi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi unveiled Odisha's ambitious clean-energy strategy. The state is targeting to derive 74% of its total power capacity from renewable sources by 2047, positioning itself as the clean-energy hub of eastern India.
During the expo, Odisha secured investment proposals totaling Rs 1,17,557 crore through 18 memoranda of understanding (MoUs), which are expected to add a capacity of 11,742 MW in various renewable and clean-energy sectors.
These investments encompass a range of technologies, including pumped storage, solar, wind, hybrid renewable energy, battery storage, green hydrogen, and green data centers, marking a pivotal advancement in the state's clean-energy transition.
Majhi characterized this development as a landmark achievement for Odisha's clean-energy goals, emphasizing the state's readiness to play a crucial role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's self-sufficiency in clean energy. The MoUs were signed following the inauguration of the Odisha Pavilion at Bharat Mandapam by Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who also opened the Netherlands Pavilion. GRIDCO Managing Director Satya Priya Rath facilitated the MoU exchanges with industry partners in the presence of dignitaries.
The event included an Odisha State Plenary focused on 'Investment Opportunities in the Renewable Energy Sector in Odisha,' attracting over 900 delegates. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi emphasized Odisha's strategic role in India's clean-energy transition, highlighting its rich natural resources, robust industrial base, and strategic port infrastructure as significant factors for attracting investments.
He pointed out the extensive opportunities available in renewable energy, energy storage, floating solar, wind power, green hydrogen, and green ammonia, while also discussing the Centre's supportive policies to boost investments in these areas. The Chief Minister stated that the state aims to fulfill at least 33% of industrial electricity needs through green energy at competitive rates. He invited investors to set up clean-energy projects in Odisha, assuring them of a stable policy environment, timely clearances via a single-window system, and enhanced transmission infrastructure ahead of energy generation.
Majhi noted that the state government is allocating Rs 15,948 crore under the Mukhya Mantri Shakti Bikash Yojana to upgrade and expand the power transmission network. He also mentioned that the ports at Paradip, Dhamra, and Gopalpur present significant opportunities for establishing green-energy production and export facilities, including projects focused on green hydrogen.
