Odisha Sees Increase in Milk Prices Effective May 3
Milk Price Adjustment in Odisha
Recent Changes in Milk Pricing: The Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) has announced a price increase for milk, effective May 3, with consumers facing an additional charge of Rs 4 per litre across all major milk variants. This adjustment affects popular types such as toned, premium, and gold milk, reflecting the rising operational costs in the dairy sector.
As a result of this revision, the price for toned milk will rise from Rs 50 to Rs 54 per litre. Similarly, premium milk will now cost Rs 58, up from Rs 54. The Gold Premium Plus variant will see its price increase from Rs 60 to Rs 64 per litre, while Gold Premium milk will now be priced at Rs 60, up from Rs 56. This uniform increase translates to an additional Rs 2 for every half litre, impacting household expenses while ensuring OMFED remains competitive.
Reasons Behind the Price Increase
The state government has cited rising costs in milk processing and transportation as the primary reasons for this price hike. Gokulananda Mallick, the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister, explained that this adjustment was necessary after a significant period without any changes. He emphasized that the increase is aimed at benefiting farmers, as OMFED will purchase milk at a higher rate. He noted, “Compared to other brands, OMFED’s prices remain quite competitive. The average increase is about Rs 2 per half litre, and we assure that quality will not be compromised. This will also lead to increased procurement from farmers.”
In conjunction with this price hike, OMFED has also raised the procurement price for milk by Rs 1 per litre, effective May 1, 2026, bringing the payment to farmers up to Rs 39.05 per litre from the previous Rs 38.05.
