Odisha CM Unveils Ambitious Port and Shipbuilding Projects Worth Over ₹46,000 Crore
Major Developments Announced for Odisha's Maritime Sector
Paradip: On Wednesday, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed plans for a new port at Bahuda in Ganjam district and a shipbuilding and repair facility at the Mahanadi river mouth near Paradip, with a combined investment exceeding ₹46,000 crore.
This announcement was made during a ceremony celebrating the foundation day of Paradip Port and the 'Boita Bandana Utsav' in the port town.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government's initiative to create a state-of-the-art cruise terminal in Puri.
The state and the Paradip Port Authority are collaborating to develop a significant port at Bahuda, which will require an investment of ₹21,500 crore.
Additionally, a shipbuilding and repair center will be established at the Mahanadi mouth near Paradip, with an investment of ₹24,700 crore, alongside the proposed cruise terminal in Puri. These initiatives are expected to significantly enhance trade, tourism, and industrial sectors in the state.
Majhi emphasized the importance of Paradip Port in driving Odisha's economic development, noting its recognition as the top large port in India. The port's cargo handling capacity has increased from 71 million tonnes in 2015 to a projected 150 million tonnes by 2025.
He stated that Paradip Port serves as a crucial gateway for modern Odisha's growth, aiming for a mega facility with an annual cargo capacity of 300 million tonnes by 'Maritime India Vision 2030' and up to 500 million tonnes as per the 'Developed India 2047' initiative.
The Chief Minister mentioned that a port-centric economy is evolving in Odisha, supported by the central government's 'Sagarmala, Gati Shakti, and National Logistics Policy' schemes. The state is also working towards establishing Coastal Economic Zones in maritime regions.
Later, the CM inaugurated Mayfair Hotels & Resorts in Paradip, which boasts 140 rooms, three signature dining options, and 16,000 square feet of event space.
During his visit to the Kalinga Bali Jatra festival in Paradip on Tuesday, Majhi announced plans for a greenfield airport in the port town, which will also become a hub for green hydrogen.
According to P L Harandha, chairman of the Paradip Port Authority, the port has consistently set new records over the past four years, surpassing achievements from the last 50 years due to improved business practices, skill development, and employee dedication, earning the title of the country's top port.
