New Delhi: Meta has committed to reporting incidents related to child safety to the relevant law enforcement bodies, as stated by government sources on Tuesday. They emphasized that ensuring the online safety of children is a "fundamental principle" for any social media entity operating in India and is considered "non-negotiable."

The government plans to take action against platforms that do not proactively ensure the safety of children online, highlighting its firm stance on the responsibility of these platforms to shield minors from harmful content and activities.

Additionally, the government is actively collaborating with various online platforms to ensure they effectively identify and eliminate such harmful content, according to the sources.

As per reports, Meta has agreed to notify law enforcement about cases of child sexual abuse. This marks a significant initial step towards creating safer online environments for children, although more actions are necessary.

The Indian government is persistently working with social media platforms to mitigate harmful content, striving to ensure that all platforms actively recognize and remove such material.

In light of increasing scrutiny, the government has intensified its examination of social media platforms regarding harmful and illegal online content, including child sexual abuse material and deepfakes.

Furthermore, a notice was issued to Meta concerning its management of such content, and the social media giant's global executives were recently summoned to India. The Centre has urged all platforms to expedite the removal of harmful content, implement stronger safeguards, and enhance accountability, clearly stating that non-compliance with Indian laws will not be tolerated.
