The company currently employs over 78,000 individuals and plans significant financial investments in the coming years.

Meta's Layoff Announcement

Meta Platforms Inc. has officially announced that layoffs will commence on May 20, affecting thousands of employees as part of a strategic restructuring aimed at enhancing efficiency and cutting costs. The company is also focusing on significant investments in artificial intelligence.

The first notifications were sent to employees in Singapore, arriving at 4 am local time. Staff in Europe and the United States are expected to receive similar communications shortly after, as indicated in an internal memo.

Reports suggest that approximately 8,000 positions will be eliminated globally, with a particular emphasis on Meta's engineering and product teams. There may be further layoffs later in the year. In a previous address, CEO Mark Zuckerberg reassured employees that AI automation is not the primary factor driving these layoffs. He acknowledged that while AI has improved the efficiency of smaller teams, it is not the sole reason for the job cuts.

Zuckerberg also discussed Meta's contentious strategy to monitor employee keystrokes and mouse movements, clarifying that this data is not directly observed by humans but is instead used to enhance AI models. As of the end of 2025, Meta employs over 78,000 individuals. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg informed investors that the company plans to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion in 2026, nearly double its expenditure from the previous year.
