A New Era for Odisha's Coffee Culture

Preeti Pallavi Patnaik stands out as the innovative co-founder of Osiris Agretail Private Limited, which oversees the specialty coffee brand ODYSSA Coffee. Based in Bhubaneswar, she is on a mission to enhance the indigenous coffee culture of Odisha. By collaborating directly with tribal farmers in Koraput, Preeti effectively merges traditional farming practices with contemporary retail strategies. Her focus on sustainability, fair trade, and creating unique café experiences that honor local heritage while adhering to global coffee standards positions her as a pivotal player in India's specialty coffee movement.

The Inspiration Behind ODYSSA Coffee

The inception of ODYSSA Coffee can be traced back to our initiatives with Koraput-origin coffee through the Kalinga DESIAGRO Foundation (KDF). As interest in this unique coffee grew, we began sharing small batches of roasted beans with early enthusiasts and organized pop-up events in Bhubaneswar to promote locally sourced coffee. The brand was established to ensure consistent access to fresh, small-batch beans from high-quality Koraput sources while fostering a community. ODYSSA Coffee serves as a natural extension of KDF, linking farmers directly with consumers and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Ethical Sourcing Through Partnerships

At the heart of ODYSSA Coffee's mission is a commitment to direct trade and complete traceability, which aligns with our sustainability goals and pride in Odia culture. Through our partnership with KDF, we engage directly with farmers in Koraput, allowing us to oversee every step from cultivation to processing. Our in-house facility transforms cherries into green beans, ensuring a transparent farm-to-cup journey. By sourcing directly from farmers and cutting out middlemen, we guarantee fair pricing, provide quality premiums, and cultivate strong relationships with farmers while maintaining traceability for every batch.

Innovative Approaches in Coffee Retail

Our journey has been both organic and responsive to market needs. Initially, we operated as a direct-to-consumer brand delivering fresh, small-batch coffee. However, after launching a café within a salon in Patia, we shifted to create an experiential retail environment. Today, we integrate coffee with community engagement through pop-ups, workshops, and events. Our approach emphasizes coffee while incorporating global trends and local flavors such as ragi, sattu, and mahua. The café experience is designed to reflect Odia culture through thoughtful aesthetics, creating an immersive and locally grounded space that continues to evolve.

Community Engagement and Cultural Storytelling

The 'ODYSSA Unscrypted' initiative serves as a community-centric platform that transcends traditional café experiences, fostering dialogue, discovery, and cultural exchange. We curate events that appeal to both coffee aficionados and newcomers, allowing coffee to be experienced in a natural, engaging manner. This initiative encourages curiosity and gradual involvement, positioning coffee as a medium for cultural storytelling that intertwines contemporary and traditional Odia narratives.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Entering the coffee business was not a premeditated decision for me; it emerged organically from my work with KDF. My goal was to create an ecosystem around Koraput coffee, providing farmers with market access, visibility, and recognition while enriching the coffee culture in Bhubaneswar. For me, this venture has always been about more than just transactions; it's about making a lasting impact. My advice to newcomers is to understand the value chain, identify gaps, define your unique selling proposition, remain patient, keep learning, and stay committed to your vision.
