Market Update: Sensex and Nifty Face Declines Amid Rising Crude Prices
Market Overview
Mumbai: The equity market indices continued their downward trend for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, with the Sensex falling by 143 points. This decline was influenced by selling pressure in the power, banking, and financial sectors, coupled with rising crude oil prices that negatively impacted investor confidence.
Additionally, increasing US bond yields and ongoing selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) further contributed to the subdued trading environment.
The BSE Sensex closed at 73,709.69, down 143.21 points or 0.19%. Initially, the index opened positively, climbing 829.29 points to reach an intraday high of 74,682.19, before retreating to a low of 73,229.45.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell by 77.60 points, or 0.34%, finishing at 22,811.35. It had earlier peaked at 23,120.90 before dropping to an intraday low of 22,702.85.
Among the major laggards in the Sensex were Bajaj Finance, Trent, Axis Bank, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, and State Bank of India, while HCL Technologies, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services were among the gainers.
In other news, the Jio Platforms IPO, valued at Rs 30,213 crore, saw nearly three times subscription on its opening day, marking the fastest IPO in India to reach full subscription within just 100 minutes.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Ltd, commented, "Indian equities surrendered early gains as high crude prices and ongoing FII selling overshadowed the positive sentiment from India-US trade talks."
He noted that profit-taking was prevalent across sectors like auto, financials, and metals, reflecting inflation concerns, while the IT sector showed resilience due to improved earnings visibility.
Nair emphasized that strong Q2 earnings and robust domestic institutional flows are crucial for market support, but the ongoing foreign selling indicates a cautious outlook.
The near-term market direction will hinge on earnings performance, trade negotiations, and foreign investment flows, with stable crude prices and global yield moderation being vital for market stability.
Asian markets displayed mixed results, with South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Shanghai's SSE Composite indices fell.
European markets were also trading higher on Wednesday, following a positive close in US markets on Tuesday.
Brent crude oil prices surpassed USD 111 per barrel, increasing by 2.23%.
On Monday, FIIs sold equities worth Rs 1,148.64 crore, while domestic institutional investors purchased shares worth Rs 3,201.19 crore, as per exchange data.
Earlier in the week, the BSE Sensex had dropped 876.37 points to close at 73,852.90, while the NSE Nifty fell by 257.20 points to finish at 22,888.95.
