Market Update: Sensex and Nifty Experience Minor Declines Amid Crude Oil Fluctuations
Market Overview
Mumbai: On Friday, the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, closed slightly lower after experiencing significant losses earlier in the day, influenced by a drop in crude oil prices and increased buying in major stocks like HDFC Bank and IT companies.
The BSE Sensex, which comprises 30 stocks, fell by 120.83 points, or 0.16%, finishing at 74,781.76. At its lowest, it had plummeted by 742.43 points, or 0.99%, reaching 74,160.16.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty, consisting of 50 shares, decreased by 79.70 points, or 0.34%, to close at 23,398.10. During the day, it had dropped by 246.4 points, or 1.04%, to a low of 23,231.40.
Among the firms listed on the Sensex, Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Power Grid, Larsen & Toubro, and Axis Bank were the most significant decliners.
Conversely, HDFC Bank, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Eternal, and Infosys saw gains.
Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, fell by 3.19%, settling at USD 104.2 per barrel.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Ltd, noted, "The market rebounded from its intraday lows, supported by value buying in certain sectors, especially IT, following a positive start in European markets. However, the weak market breadth indicates that broader consolidation is still in play."
He added that while high crude prices, foreign outflows, and geopolitical uncertainties may lead to increased volatility, strong domestic fundamentals and robust institutional support are encouraging buying at lower levels, which helps mitigate downside risks and supports a positive medium-term outlook.
In Asian markets, indices such as South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng all closed lower.
European markets, however, were trading positively.
US markets finished in the red on Thursday.
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 438.24 crore on Thursday.
On the previous day, the Sensex had gained 138.36 points, or 0.19%, closing at 74,902.59 due to last-minute buying, while the Nifty rose by 46.30 points, or 0.20%, to finish at 23,477.80.
