M3M India's iMpower Initiative: Empowering Migrant Workers and Their Families
Transforming Lives Through Community Impact
In a sector often evaluated by its physical dimensions, M3M India is establishing a new standard that emphasizes compassion, care, and community influence rather than just buildings and developments. Central to this transformation is iMpower, a key social development initiative by the M3M Foundation, which is making a significant difference in the lives of migrant workers and their families throughout India.
The real estate sector contributes approximately 7% to India's GDP and is crucial for job creation. However, the countless construction workers who drive this growth often remain overlooked. M3M India, a prominent real estate developer, is striving to change this narrative.
Under the guidance of Payal Kanodia, Trustee of M3M Foundation, iMpower—short for Initiative for Maximising Potential Of Workforce through Ensuring Resources—directly engages with migrant labor communities to fill essential gaps in education, healthcare, digital literacy, and access to government benefits.
From Gurugram to Noida and Panipat, the initiative has already reached over 50,000 workers and their families across 39 active sites in three states.
Key components of iMpower include:
- Establishment of early childhood education centers at construction sites
- Engagement of adolescents through Kishori Samoohs and life skills training
- Digital skills training for adult workers to promote e-governance and financial inclusion
- Health and hygiene programs, including maternal counseling and distribution of sanitary products
- Facilitation of access to social entitlements, aiding workers in obtaining Aadhaar cards, ration benefits, insurance, and more
These site-based iMpower Clubs serve as community hubs—safe and hygienic spaces where children receive preschool education aligned with state curricula. Once prepared, these children are transitioned into formal government schools, creating a sustainable educational pathway from labor camps.
The initiative gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. As lockdowns disrupted supply chains and caused mass labor migration, iMpower emerged as a crucial support system, assisting over 180,000 individuals through meal distributions, ration kits, and essential healthcare supplies.
Currently, the M3M Foundation continues to provide more than 37,000 fresh meals daily at project sites, ensuring that every worker concludes their day with dignity and a full stomach.
Commenting on the initiative, Payal Kanodia stated, “True development starts with those who construct the nation. Our aim is to ensure that the workers behind our infrastructure are not only included but also uplifted.”
Through iMpower, M3M India is redefining the role of builders in contemporary India. It transcends the mere construction of homes and high-rises, focusing instead on nurturing hearts, fostering hope, and unlocking human potential.
As India aims for a $5 trillion economy, the success of iMpower illustrates that genuine nation-building begins at the grassroots level—with the very hands that elevate our skylines.
