India's Retail Inflation Sees Slight Increase in April 2026

In April 2026, India's retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose to 3.48%, marking a slight increase from March. This uptick is the highest in 13 months but remains below the Reserve Bank of India's target. Food inflation saw a significant rise, impacting household budgets, while various expenditure categories displayed mixed trends. Notably, restaurant inflation surged sharply, reflecting rising operational costs. This article delves into the latest inflation data and its implications for consumers and policymakers.

Overview of Inflation Trends

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), India's retail inflation, as gauged by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to 3.48% year-on-year in April 2026. This figure shows a slight uptick from March's 3.4%, suggesting that price pressures have remained relatively stable throughout the month. Although this increase is modest, it marks the highest inflation rate observed in the last 13 months. Nevertheless, the overall inflation rate continues to stay below the Reserve Bank of India's target of 4%, providing some comfort to policymakers who are closely watching price movements. In February, the CPI inflation was recorded at 3.21% based on the revised CPI series, which now utilizes 2024 as its base year instead of 2012.

Food Inflation Experiences Significant Rise

In April, food prices saw a notable rise, with the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) inflation increasing to 4.2%, up from 3.87% in March. The inflation rate for food and beverages also rose to 4.01%, compared to 3.71% the previous month. This data indicates that food items continue to put upward pressure on household budgets, even as overall inflation remains relatively controlled. Both rural and urban inflation experienced slight increases during this period, with rural inflation climbing to 3.74% from 3.63% in March, while urban inflation rose to 3.16% from 3.11%.

Mixed Patterns in Household Expenditure Inflation

Various key categories of household spending displayed varied inflation trends in April. The inflation rate for housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels decreased to 1.71%, down from 1.97% in March. Healthcare inflation also saw a slight decline to 1.64% from 1.75% the previous month. Conversely, inflation for furnishing and household equipment increased to 1.61%, up from 1.39%. Transport inflation dipped into negative territory at -0.01%, compared to 0.00% in March, while inflation in information and communication rose slightly to 0.50% from 0.33%.

Surge in Restaurant Inflation

Among the major categories, the inflation rate for restaurants and accommodation services experienced one of the most significant increases, rising to 4.20% in April from 2.88% in March, reflecting higher operational and input costs. Inflation for educational services decreased to 3.15% from 3.30%, while inflation for recreation, sports, and cultural activities eased to 2.11% from 2.28%. The inflation rate for clothing and footwear stood at 2.80% for the month. Additionally, inflation for intoxicants such as paan and tobacco surged to 4.76%, compared to 4.23% in March. Personal care and miscellaneous inflation remained high at 17.66%, although it decreased from the previous month's 18.65%.
