India's Major Investment in Domestic Military Drones Exceeds $2 Billion
Significant Military Drone Acquisition
India is poised to make a substantial investment exceeding $2 billion in military drones from local manufacturers, marking a historic procurement in this sector, according to a report by a news agency. The initiative is reportedly in its final stages, with expected deliveries scheduled within the next 18 to 24 months, as stated by the President of the Drone Federation of India. He mentioned, "In the next phase, tactical drone procurements in India may exceed 200 billion rupees."
The drone industry in India is experiencing rapid growth as the nation seeks to enhance its defense and technological landscape. Currently, there are over 600 companies involved in the production of drones, components, software, or related technologies, with around 100 of these firms dedicated solely to defense applications. This sector has gained significant momentum due to increasing geopolitical tensions and supportive initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive, relaxed regulations, and the focus on strengthening defense manufacturing through 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' programs.
The escalating demand for security and surveillance has further fueled investments and interest in the drone sector. Experts assert that large-scale orders are crucial for enhancing the country's defense capabilities while providing domestic manufacturers with opportunities to expand production, attract investment, and improve export competitiveness.
