India's Job Market Shows Stability: Unemployment Rate Holds Steady

New Delhi: The job market in India has shown little change year-on-year during the April to June quarter of this fiscal year, indicating a stable employment scenario without significant growth or decline.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the unemployment rate for the working-age population was recorded at 5.5% in this quarter, slightly down from 5.6% a year earlier.

The worker population ratio (WPR) remained constant at 51.4% in June 2026, showing a minor increase of 0.2 percentage points from 51.2% in June 2025.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), indicates that the urban job market has also maintained a steady state.

Year-on-year, the urban unemployment rate decreased from 7.1% in June of the previous year to 6.6% in June 2026, while the rural unemployment rate has remained relatively stable.

The overall labour force participation rate (LFPR) for June this year was 54.4%, unchanged from the previous month and slightly higher than the 54.2% recorded in June 2025.

For females, the LFPR was noted at 32.7% in June 2026, down from 32.8% in May 2026, yet still 0.7 percentage points higher than the same month last year.

The survey highlighted a narrowing gender gap in rural labour force participation compared to urban areas.

In rural regions, the female LFPR increased to 36.6% in June 2026, up by 1.4 percentage points from 35.2% in June 2025.

Conversely, urban female participation slightly decreased to 24.8% from 25.2% in June of the previous year.

The overall WPR in rural areas remained stable at 53.8%, consistent with the previous month and 0.5 percentage points higher than the 53.3% recorded in June last year. Urban areas saw a slight improvement, with the WPR rising to 46.8% in June 2026 from 46.6% the month prior.

The Ministry of Statistics estimated the number of workers aged 15 and above using projected population figures from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

On average, 566 million individuals aged 15 and older were employed in India during the April to June 2026 period, comprising 402 million males and 164 million females.

The quarterly estimates at the national level are based on data collected from a sample of 559,673 individuals surveyed.
