India's Economic Growth Remains Strong Amid Global Challenges
India's Economic Resilience
India has maintained its position as the fastest-growing major economy globally, despite facing challenges from escalating geopolitical tensions and rising energy costs, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Speaking at the BJP's Viksit Bharat event in Bengaluru, she highlighted the country's robust economic performance, noting that India recorded a remarkable 7.7% growth in FY26, an increase from 7.1% the previous year. The GDP growth for the January-March quarter reached 7.8%, surpassing economists' forecasts and matching the growth rate of the previous quarter.
In her address, Sitharaman discussed significant developments in Karnataka, revealing that over 2 crore PM Jan Dhan accounts have been established, with MUDRA loans exceeding Rs 3.4 lakh crore primarily benefiting the state's MSME sectors, including Peenya and Sirsi. She also mentioned that more than 1.9 crore Ayushman cards have been issued, providing health coverage of Rs 5 lakh, while four crore beneficiaries receive free food grains under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
Furthermore, she noted that over 43 lakh farmers are receiving direct PM-KISAN support, and 31.7 lakh Kisan Credit Cards have been distributed. The Jal Jeevan Mission has successfully provided piped water to 87 lakh rural households in Karnataka, and 41 lakh Ujjwala LPG connections have been established. Sitharaman also reported that 1.67 crore individuals have enrolled in the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), 2.60 crore in the PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and 49 lakh in the Atal Pension Yojana. Additionally, over 6 lakh street vendors have benefited from collateral-free PM SVANidhi loans.
Addressing the ongoing fuel crisis, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, assured that there is no energy shortage in the country. He stated that the supply of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and natural gas remains stable. For instance, daily LPG consumption of 80,000 metric tonnes is now supported by domestic production, which has increased from 32,000 to 54,000 metric tonnes, thereby reducing import reliance. Puri confirmed that India has sufficient LPG stocks for 75-80 days.
