India's Commitment to Renewable Energy and Green Economy
Government's Investment in Battery Storage
Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, announced that the government is making significant investments in battery storage systems, promising visible results in the near future. He stated, "Last year, India ranked second globally in battery additions. Our focus is on enhancing wind and solar storage systems, which will ultimately reduce electricity costs." Speaking at the Adani Presents Times Network Sustainability Conclave 2026, co-powered by MAHATRANSCO in New Delhi, he emphasized India's economic resilience amidst global uncertainties.
Joshi remarked, "Despite challenges in West Asia and a volatile global landscape, India's economy has shown robust performance in the first quarter of the financial year. The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains positions India among a select few nations pioneering next-generation clean transportation technologies. Today, India is not only the fastest-growing major economy but is also emerging as a trusted growth narrative. We have achieved our commitment to secure 60 percent of our energy needs by 2025, five years ahead of schedule." He also noted India's goal to cut emission intensity by 47 percent by 2035.
Investor Sentiment on India's Green Transition
During the session titled ‘Financing India's Green Economy,’ Shalabh Tandon, the South Asia Regional Head of Operations & Climate Change at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), shared insights on global investor attitudes towards India's green initiatives. He mentioned, “Many international investors are willing to embrace the risks associated with investing in India.” However, he cautioned about currency risks, stating, “Over the past 1.5 years, the currency has faced significant challenges, altering global investors' perceptions. Those looking to invest in India as debt financiers are seeking hedging or swap mechanisms, while equity investors are increasingly concerned about currency risks and are evaluating their overall investment strategies.” The World Bank Group is collaborating with the government and regulators to address these currency concerns.
Voices for Sustainable Change
The conclave also featured a special video message from Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, who highlighted the success of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, which aims to add 1.1 lakh hectares of forest area annually, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event brought together various influential figures, including actors and sustainability advocates like Shriya Pilgaonkar and Adah Sharma, to discuss the importance of individual and community involvement in fostering sustainable change. Themed ‘India 2035: A Self-Reliant Nation,’ the conclave addressed vital topics such as renewable energy, green financing, technological advancements, and citizen engagement in achieving India's sustainability objectives.
