India's Commerce Minister Refutes Claims of Trade Deal Delay with the US
Minister Goyal Addresses Trade Deal Speculations
On Monday, Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, rejected claims that India had declined to sign a hastily arranged interim trade agreement with the United States, asserting that the report was "entirely false, unfounded, and misleading." He emphasized the positive discussions he had with USTR Jamieson Greer during his visit to Delhi in June, stating, "Both parties reiterated their dedication to a deal that is equitable, commercially significant, and beneficial for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both nations." He further noted, "Our teams are actively working towards this goal."
As reported by a news agency, the anticipated interim trade agreement between India and the US was not finalized during Greer's recent visit to New Delhi. Both sides had hoped for a limited deal, but the US did not meet India's critical demands regarding tariff concessions and assurances against future levies. India remains firm on its stance regarding sensitive sectors like agriculture. An official stated, "We are clear that we will not rush into an agreement that does not offer favorable terms or compromise on crucial issues like agriculture."
Commerce Secretary Confident About Trade Deal Progress
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal expressed optimism on Monday, stating that the framework for the India-US trade deal is prepared and awaits the right moment for signing. He mentioned, "We do not perceive any challenges in the negotiations for the India-US trade deal. Consultations are moving in a positive direction, and both parties are optimistic. The framework for the trade deal is ready for signing at an appropriate time, and trade relations continue to strengthen, including energy imports from the US," Agrawal added.
