India's AMCA Project: A New Era for Defence Manufacturing in Puttaparthi
Transforming Puttaparthi into a Defence Hub
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) initiative in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, is poised to elevate India's defence manufacturing capabilities and change the perception of the region. On May 15, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, inaugurated the project in Sri Sathya Sai district. This ambitious venture encompasses an Aircraft Integration and Flight Testing Centre, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). It is anticipated that the AMCA project will create approximately 7,500 jobs and attract significant aerospace investments, potentially exceeding 1 lakh crore rupees.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for the AMCA project, Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh shared insights into the project's inception, which dates back to 2025. He recounted a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 5, 2025, where he presented the vision for Andhra Pradesh and advocated for the AMCA project to be established in the state. Since that pivotal moment, the state government has been dedicated to advancing this initiative. Nara Lokesh highlighted the continuous efforts of Industries Minister T.G. Bharath and the special initiatives taken by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to secure this project for Andhra Pradesh.
Experts predict that Puttaparthi will transition from being solely recognized as a spiritual hub to becoming a significant player in India's defence landscape, thereby enhancing the country's defence ecosystem considerably.
