India's Ambitious LPG Pipeline Network to Enhance Fuel Distribution
India's New LPG Pipeline Initiative
India is making significant progress with plans to establish a comprehensive liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline network. This initiative aims to lessen the reliance on road transportation for cooking fuel, which currently accounts for a substantial portion of the nation's LPG supply. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is nearing the conclusion of its evaluation of bids for four major pipeline projects, which collectively require an investment of approximately Rs 12,500 crore and will cover around 2,500 kilometers.
The proposed pipelines include routes from Cherlapally to Nagpur, Shikrapur to Hubli to Goa, Paradip to Raipur, and Jhansi to Sitarganj. These projects are part of a larger strategy that has identified nine LPG pipeline developments.
PNGRB initiated this process through a suo motu proposal and has been actively advancing the bidding phase. The primary objective is to significantly reduce the transportation of LPG via road tankers and transition to a more efficient pipeline system.
Safety is a crucial factor driving this pipeline initiative. Historically, transporting LPG by road has been linked to various accident risks, leading authorities to seek safer alternatives. PNGRB stated, “This represents a significant advancement in enhancing India’s energy logistics network, improving the reliability, safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability of LPG transportation nationwide.”
In light of past accidents related to LPG road transport, transitioning to pipelines is expected to mitigate risks, ensuring safer and more reliable delivery.
Enhancing Supply and Storage Capabilities
In addition to transportation, these pipelines are designed to serve a dual purpose by acting as storage buffers during emergencies or supply interruptions. This capability is vital for maintaining a steady LPG supply across various regions. The infrastructure will connect refineries and import terminals directly to bottling plants, facilitating smoother LPG movement and distribution throughout the country. With rising consumption in both domestic and commercial sectors, the demand for a robust and efficient supply chain has become increasingly pressing. While pipelines are recognized as the most efficient method for LPG transport, a significant amount is still managed through bulk tankers.
