Market Overview

Representational Image

Mumbai, Oct 15: The major domestic equity indices experienced a significant rise on Thursday, driven by a drop in oil prices that lifted investor confidence and alleviated fears regarding persistent inflation.

Index Performance

The Sensex climbed by 1,533.72 points, marking a 2.11 percent increase, closing at 74,315.61. Meanwhile, the Nifty rose by 374.65 points, or 1.66 percent, finishing at 22,997.35.

Technical Insights

Experts noted that the Nifty concluded positively after starting strong, maintaining a pattern of higher highs and lows, indicating ongoing buying interest.

During intraday trading, the index briefly surpassed the critical 23,000 level but could not maintain it. The immediate resistance is seen between 23,000 and 23,100. A sustained breakout above this range could enhance bullish momentum, potentially leading towards 23,300 to 23,400.

Conversely, if the index fails to stay above 22,800, it may face renewed selling pressure, pushing it towards the support zone of 22,600 to 22,500.

Market Sentiment

Investor optimism surged following a decrease in crude oil prices, which alleviated concerns about rising input costs and inflation, resulting in widespread buying of leading stocks.

Among the top gainers in the Nifty, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, and Bharti Airtel provided substantial support to the benchmark indices.

However, the broader market lagged behind the main indices, with the Nifty MidCap index falling by 0.36 percent and the Nifty SmallCap index declining by 1.31 percent.

Sector Performance

The performance across sectors was varied during the trading session. The Nifty IT index saw significant gains due to strong interest in technology stocks, while the Nifty PSU Bank index was the weakest sector.

Among sectoral indices on the NSE, the Nifty Private Bank index stood out as the top performer.

Future Outlook

Analysts emphasized that the near-term sustainability of the market will hinge on Q2 earnings meeting expectations for revenue and margins, broader market participation, and signs of returning foreign investments. Additionally, stability in oil prices and currency will be vital amid geopolitical tensions and global inflation risks.

Currency Movement

In currency trading, the Rupee appreciated by approximately 9 paise, reaching 95.05, bolstered by a weaker Dollar Index, stable crude oil prices, and improved sentiment following a robust rally in domestic capital markets.
