New Delhi, Sep 23: Indian Railways has marked a notable achievement with the introduction of the KAVACH Version 4.0 safety system on the South Central Railway (SCR), as per an official announcement made on Wednesday.
The transition from KAVACH Version 3.2 to Version 4.0 has been successfully executed over a stretch of 108 kilometers in the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi area of the Hyderabad Division.
This cutting-edge version features technological enhancements derived from the insights gained during the implementation of KAVACH Version 3.2, which was utilized over 1,465 kilometers on the South Central Railway.
KAVACH 4.0 is designed to enhance safety, incorporate advanced technology, improve reliability, and ensure safer train operations. It is set for extensive rollout across the Indian Railways network, according to the statement.
Developed and tested by Indian Railways, KAVACH 4.0 functions as an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. This latest iteration includes significant upgrades to meet the varied operational and technological demands of the Indian Railways.
Among the key enhancements in KAVACH 4.0 are improved location accuracy for better train positioning and enhanced signal aspect information in larger yards, which bolsters situational awareness during train operations.
The system also features a station-to-station KAVACH interface via Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) to improve communication and system integration, along with a direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems for better signaling infrastructure integration.
KAVACH is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system aimed at boosting operational safety. It assists train operators in adhering to speed limits and can automatically engage brakes if the operator fails to respond appropriately.
This system is designed to avert Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), manage train speed in critical scenarios, and minimize collision risks. It also enhances safety during adverse weather conditions.
As a sophisticated safety system, KAVACH necessitates the highest level of safety certification, specifically Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4).
The implementation of KAVACH involves deploying various technological and communication components across railway segments. This includes setting up KAVACH at stations and block sections, installing RFID tags along the track, erecting telecommunication towers, and laying optical fibre cables. Additionally, Loco KAVACH units must be fitted on locomotives operating within the Indian Railways network.
