New Delhi, July 25: A recent study by Assocham indicates that the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) could significantly boost bilateral trade, projecting an increase from billion in 2025-26 to 5 billion by 2030. This growth could also lead to the creation of approximately 7-10 lakh new jobs.

The FTA, which has been effective since July 15, 2026, is anticipated to broaden business opportunities through enhanced market access, particularly benefiting the youth by generating new employment prospects, as highlighted by the Assocham Global Research and Strategy Centre.

According to the study, sectors such as textiles, leather, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, and automotive are expected to see significant employment growth and export enhancement due to improved market access and new opportunities.

To fully harness this potential, the study emphasizes the importance of maintaining competitiveness. Nirmal K Minda, President of Assocham, stated that Indian enterprises must adhere to product quality standards, certification requirements, Rules of Origin compliance, and international sustainability benchmarks. Additionally, reforms to ease business operations and ongoing investments in infrastructure and supply chains are essential to meet these standards.

The engineering goods sector is poised to gain from this agreement, fostering growth among MSMEs and contributing to job creation.

Moreover, streamlined customs processes and digital trade regulations are expected to facilitate compliance, minimize turnaround times, and foster a more dynamic trading environment, according to Minda.

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) unites two economies that complement each other well.

India brings a vast market, a youthful workforce, a robust MSME sector, and strengths in labor-intensive industries, while the UK contributes advanced technology and expertise in high-value services.

Assocham asserts that these synergies will bolster long-term economic collaboration, trade expansion, innovative partnerships, and supply chain resilience in the face of a challenging global economic landscape.

As the global economic environment becomes increasingly intricate, this FTA marks a significant milestone in the economic relationship between India and the UK.
