India Considers Boosting Fuel Supplies to Bangladesh Amid Energy Crisis

India's Response to Bangladesh's Energy Needs

New Delhi: In light of the severe energy crisis affecting Bangladesh, India announced on Friday that it is reviewing Dhaka's appeal for increased petroleum product supplies.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, stated, "We have an existing agreement with Bangladesh for diesel supply. Regarding the request for additional supplies, we will assess it based on our own needs, refining capabilities, and the availability of diesel within our country."

This statement was made during his regular media briefing.

Jaiswal also mentioned that India has invited Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a bilateral meeting and to participate in the outreach session of the forthcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi.

"We have sent an invitation to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a bilateral visit, as well as for the outreach session of the BRICS Summit," he added.

"I will keep you informed of any developments regarding this invitation," he continued.

The BRICS summit, which India is hosting on September 12 and 13, is anticipated to address various urgent global issues, including the economic impacts of the West Asia crisis.

As the current chair, New Delhi is responsible for hosting this significant event.

Leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to be in attendance.

Originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia set to join in 2025.

This coalition has become a powerful entity, uniting 11 major emerging economies that account for approximately 49.5% of the global population, around 40% of the world's GDP, and about 26% of global trade.
