Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Accra: India and Ghana have engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing multilateral cooperation, with a focus on India's growing involvement with the African Union and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States). This meeting took place between India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Ghana's Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Jaishankar, who began his three-nation tour of Africa on Tuesday, also had a significant meeting with Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama, where they explored the robust progress in their bilateral relationship.

Following the discussions, Jaishankar expressed on social media that both nations, as partners from the Global South, share mutual development goals and a historical bond.

The ministers deliberated on expanding their comprehensive partnership across various sectors, including trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, technology, and defense.

Jaishankar emphasized the importance of enhancing multilateral cooperation and strengthening India's ties with the African Union and ECOWAS.

As a founding member of ECOWAS, Ghana plays a crucial role in promoting economic and political integration in West Africa.

Notably, President Mahama is set to take on the presidency of the African Union in 2027.

Ablakwa highlighted that Ghana and India have established a high-level strategic partnership, which was elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit last year.

During the meeting, both nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana, aimed at fostering collaboration in academics and scientific research.

Additionally, an MoU was signed between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Ghana's CSIR-Crops Research Institute to enhance cooperation in agricultural research and education.

Earlier, Jaishankar met with President Mahama, where they discussed the positive trajectory of India-Ghana relations.

He conveyed warm regards from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi, expressing appreciation for Mahama's vision for Ghana's development and his commitment to deepening their Comprehensive Partnership.

In a symbolic gesture, Jaishankar, along with his Ghanaian counterpart and the education minister, planted a Plumeria sapling, representing their commitment to sustainable development.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Ghana in July 2025 marked a historic moment, being the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades.

Following his stay in Ghana, Jaishankar will proceed to Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia, where he will engage in further discussions with local leaders to strengthen bilateral ties and address regional and global issues.
